Proton-pump inhibitor drugs (PPIs) inhibits the production of gastric acid, which acts as a barrier against pathogenic microorganisms. As a result, these micro-organisms continue their path. They disrupt the intestinal microbiome and cause side effects, such as diarrhea. Balancing the microbiome with friendly bacteria can improve negative effects.
Magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesaemia) has been identified as a side effect of PPIs, as PPIs treatment has been shown to affect gastrointestinal absorption of magnesium. Low levels of magnesium can cause problems, some of which are potentially serious, such as arrhythmias, seizures and tetanus. Magnesium citrate is used directly by the body without the need for gastric acid or other conversion process.
PPI medication increases the risk of osteoporotic fracture; due to hypochlorhydria, a decreased absorption of calcium is observed as calcium solubility is pH-dependent.
Long-term PPI medication can cause iron deficiency that directly affects the iron metabolism, suppressing its gastrointestinal absorption, due to a decrease in gastric acid secretion.
Zinc is more easily absorbed by the body at a low pH. PPI medication increases the pH of the stomach, which makes absorption of zinc more difficult and leads to deficiencies.
Vitamin C is excreted in the gastric fluid. During treatment with PPIs, gastric acid secretion decreases and consequently the concentration of vitamin C there. There are also indications that the use of PPIs causes a decrease in vitamin C levels, reducing the bioavailability of its active antioxidant form, as ascorbic acid.
Long-term treatment with PPIs has been associated with malabsorption of vitamin B12. The increase of intraceal pH prevents the proper release of the vitamin from dietary proteins H allow absorption. In addition, a decrease in gastric acid can be an early factor of bacterial SIBO that in turn leads to an increase in the consumption of vitamin B12 by bacteria.
Vitamin D3 improves the function of the immune system and enhances the body’s defense.
